Coastal Voices Chorus welcomes new singers
Are you a woman who sang in your high school or college chorus and would love the opportunity to make music again?
Coastal Voices, a women’s barbershop chorus that is part of Harmony, Inc., is looking for new members. The group is holding an open house on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church, 8260 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers.
Founded in 1959, Harmony, Inc. currently has more than 65 chapters and more than 2,000 members. In keeping with the organization’s motto, “A Blend with Friendship,” many Harmony members develop lifelong friendships that span generations and know no geographic boundaries.
Coastal Voices draws members from Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties.
Women’s barbershop singing is a vibrant a cappella art form defined by close four-part harmony, emotional connection and a rich history of expansion. It relies on specific voice parts and dedicated organizations to create an unmistakable acoustic sound.
Core musical elements include four voice parts which borrow their names from men’s barbershop: the lead (carrying the melody), tenor (harmonizing above), baritone (completing the chords), and bass (providing the lowest foundational notes). The objective is to lock and ring, a sound achieved when precise tuning of chords creates an acoustic phenomenon of overtone resonance.
The music is a cappella style, entirely unaccompanied by instruments, putting total focus on vocal blend, ear training and pure tone.
Women’s barbershop singing recently hit a new high note. On July 4, 2026, the all-female quartet GQ made history in St. Louis by becoming the first women’s ensemble to win the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Quartet Contest in its 88-year existence.
