To the editor:

America is a capitalist, democratic, and socialist country. Yes, all three, blended together, keeping each in check!  Private industry co-exists with public services. No American success story can truly claim achievement without the use of socialist roadways, a shared monetary system, public water systems, first responders and even insurance! All of these costs are shared to spread out the expense. Wouldn’t we all like to reduce our financial output? Yes! If society shares more universal expenses, we will.

No one needs the same government program at the same time in life, but we will all likely go through phases to balance out a community’s ecosystem.  While someone opens a bank account with FDIC (federal deposit insurance), another person may start a HUD (housing and urban development) backed mortgage.  Some people have children in public school, others may have elderly parents in care programs. Suburban citizens access information from taxpayer funded digital networks, rural residents need access to public libraries.

Living in a society is a collective effort. Capitalism preserves the ideal of individual advancement through competition. Democracy reduces unfair obstacles; socialism is the foundation of shared basics.
