The nation knows Southwest Florida for its postcard-like images of pristine beaches, deep blue skies and wildlife enjoying unspoiled habitats. Leisure travel injects billions of dollars into our local economy and supports thousands of jobs in hotels, restaurants, retail stores and attractions.

Beyond those tourism-centric assets, though, is an emerging culture of innovation and ingenuity that are redefining the region’s future. An economy once tied to tourism, agriculture and construction has expanded to include corporate headquarters, high-tech medical manufacturing and testing, and AI-enhanced technology companies all focused on the future of business and our economy.

Look no further than the 2026 Edison Awards for an example… or five examples, to be exact. During this year’s event, which will be held April 15-16 in Fort Myers, five Southwest Florida-based businesses will be among the list of distinguished companies hailed as global innovators:

•  EmCyte Corporation – Fort Myers: Pure SupraPhysiologic Concentrating System with AspiraDome Technology (Point of Care Therapeutics)

•  ADDMAN – Fort Myers: ADDCAAM (Advanced Manufacturing Processes)

•  e2companies – Bonita Springs: Virtual Utility (Predictive and Real-Time Systems)

•  Arthrex – Naples: Percutaneos Pars Fracture Compression Screw – Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Repair and Synergy Power System – Surgical Robotics and Precision Therapy

•  Digital ShortCutz – Naples: Conversion Velocity Engine (AI-Enhanced Workflow Solutions)

Considering only seven Florida-based companies are being recognized at the 2026 Edison Awards, the fact that five of those seven award-winners are local businesses is quite astonishing. That speaks volumes to the culture of innovation and entrepreneurialism being fostered in Southwest Florida. It doesn’t end there, either. A glance through this year’s event program also signals the region’s unwavering support for innovation. Nine of the 15 event sponsors, including Platinum Sponsor Horizon Foundation, are based in the region. Also appearing on stage will be local high school students being recognized for their achievements during the 2026 AI + HI High School Innovation Challenge, which is sponsored by the Horizon Foundation and Edison Awards.

Beyond announcing award winners, the Edison Awards also features an Innovators Showcase, an exhibition that allows attendees to experience emerging technologies, breakthrough ideas and futuristic solutions. Additionally, an Innovators Forum includes panel discussions and fireside chats featuring global innovators like NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who will participate in a discussion moderated by NBA Ambassador Ahmad Rashad.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Fort Myers is fertile ground for innovation. After all, the namesake of the Edison Awards — Thomas Edison — spent his winters right down the street from the Caloosa Sound Convention Center, where the Edison Awards will be held. Today, visitors to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates can’t help but experience the entrepreneurial spirit of Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and other visionaries who found inspiration and warmth in this community.

North Carolina’s Research Triangle and California’s Silicon Valley are well-known as hotbeds for tech, but Southwest Florida has quietly and precisely built an ecosystem allowing entrepreneurs, industrialists, capitalists and big thinkers to thrive. Perhaps the 2026 Edison Awards will be Southwest Florida’s official introduction to the world as a pro-business community that wholeheartedly welcomes new ideas, new companies and new visionaries who want to work in a supportive community.
