Trump and Reagan, indeed

To the editor:

I do understand the need to publish a range of viewpoints but I think you know the letter from John Cataldi (April 17) would set my hair on fire, and I could not resist reacting. Fortunately the letter was brief.

The writer accused the Democratic Party of being sufficiently Machiavellian to manipulate the mainstream media “…to degrade and humiliate President Trump.” Trump does that all by himself in his threatening irrational expletive-festooned nocturnal submissions. The Democrats spread “…unsupported lies…to get control of the White House…[Democrats] deny our President is a humanitarian…(whose) responsibility is to protect humanity.” Well that is a novel, if grandiose, job description.

The writer concludes by rating Trump’s performance on par with Washington, Jefferson and Reagan, unlike “Democratic politicians who are only seeking reelection for their own benefit.” Trump is the definitive exemplar of selfless public service combined with extreme modesty about his accomplishments. And he is a great decorator.

He does share some things with Reagan: Trickle down economics, massive tax cuts in social services to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy, scandalous secret activities with foreign powers, and loss of mental capacity while in office.
