Checks & balances key to democracy

To the editor:

The fundamental balance of government has deteriorated.

We now witness legislators who, in error, believe their primary duty is to follow presidential or gubernatorial directives.

This misunderstanding must be addressed by electing representatives who recognize that their foremost responsibility is to provide oversight and checks on the executive branch.

Moreover, the Supreme Court of the United States has reported that an overwhelming number of presidential cases are clogging the judicial system, hindering its ability to hear the typical volume of cases stemming from lower courts.

The Supreme Court is a limited-scope appellate body, comprised of a fixed number of justices, and tasked with focusing on cases of national importance.

This situation underscores the urgent need to reinforce the separation of powers and restore the intended function of our democratic institutions.
