Civic & Community Center: NFM Renaissance Campaign officially under way

3 min read

Well, the surgery to my left eyelids on March 11 went well- I think! Little pain with bandages over half of my face and precious little from doctor as to details or prognosis. More when I know more.

The NFM Civic Association meeting on March 8 resulted in the election of John Bry for the last vacant seat on the Board of Directors for a 3-year term, and he was assigned the portfolios of Community Development, Conversion to 501 (c) (3) IRS status and Grant Writing. Election of all officers for a 1-year term resulted in the following: Yours truly was re-elected President; Rudy Berndlmaier and Larry Murphy elected as 1st and 2d Vice Presidents respectively; Richard Dunmire, Treasurer and Judi Roth, secretary. Awards were presented to Linda Yorde and Rudy Berndlmaier as “Outstanding Director of the Month” and to Tracy Cole as “Outstanding Member of the Month”.

The NFM Community Planning Panel and Design Review Panel filled its vacancy by appointing John Bry to both Panels. John brings to the panels his learnings and experience in Community Development over more than 20 years. Tony Palermo, Principal Planner, Lee County Planning Panel discussed their proposals to amend the Zoning Code to include a separate section for Social Services and Agencies. The Design Review Panel considered the applications of three entities seeking new projects. For more info, go to www.nfmcpp.com.

The NFM Renaissance Campaign, dedicated to turning around NFM economically, raising community pride and participation and optimism, and making Our Town a better place in which to live and work, held its first meeting on March 10 at noon at the Road 41 Grill, 13351 N. Cleveland Ave. This organizational meeting established ground rules for proceeding in the future before turning to a far-ranging agenda, which included a discussion of clean air and clean water, physical facilities needed, improvements to North Shore Park, a public boat ramp, public use of the former Waterway Estates site, now county-owned, and the most daunting of all, how to create a sense of “community” in NFM residents-and a sense of pride, optimism and participation. If you feel that you can help on any relevant issue, please call me. The next meeting is Tuesday, April 12, at noon at Road 41 Grill, 13351 N. Cleveland Ave, southbound just south of Hancock Bridge Parkway. The speaker will be Ray Judah, former county commissioner and longtime champion of environmental initiatives, to discuss North Fort Myers’ river pollution problem-one of the most important issues of our time!
