Ida Baker and Oasis win football openers; Cape, Mariner and Bishop Verot come up short

Ida Baker 33, Bonita Springs 6: Dominic Pena and Patryell Coleman ran for two touchdowns each as the Bulldogs’ ground game pounded the Bull Sharks. Aiden Thurber also scored on a quarterback sneak. Ida Baker’s defense kept Bonita Springs off the scoreboard until the final minutes.
Port Charlotte 63, Cape Coral 26: The Pirates piled up the yards and the points on the ground to make the season opener a miserable night for Cape Coral. Port Charlotte had nine rushing touchdowns. The Seahawks got two touchdowns from Noel Devine Jr., coming on a 88-yard kick return and a 4-yard run. Soldier Morse caught a 59-yard TD pass from Derek Hooker for another Cape score.
Oasis 18, Southwest Florida Christian 14: Cameron Hill scored two touchdowns for the Sharks, including what would be the game-winner. That touchdown was set up by a Seth Roberts interception. Liam Gruenwald ran a kickoff back 87 yards for Oasis.
Wellen Park 24, Mariner 21: A Wellen Park squad from Venice playing its first varsity game scored the game’s first 17 points. The Tritons rallied to make it close, but couldn’t quite catch up. Jamarion Corbett scored on runs of 80 and 1 yards, and Wenstan Penermon ran for a 9-yard Mariner score.
John Carroll Catholic 17, Bishop Verot 0: The Verot defense played well, allowing one offensive touchdown and fewer than 200 total yards. Friday’s score was 3-0 at halftime. The second John Carroll touchdown came on a fourth-quarter pick-six. Offensively, the Vikings had two touchdowns erased by penalties.
